Environmental portraiture or journalism can be very powerful with a recurring theme and/or subject. Add some good lighting and a fast lens and you have the makings of a great series. It can eventually become your “look”. Amy Stein has mastered her look and has parlayed it into a worldwide reputation.

From her blog bio:

“Amy Stein is a photographer based in New York City. Her work explores our evolving isolation from community, culture, and the environment. She has been exhibited nationally and internationally has been featured in publications such as Photo District News, ARTnews, Vanity Fair Italia, Money Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine and The New York Times. In 2006, Amy was a winner of the Saatchi Gallery/Guardian Prize for her Domesticated series. In 2007, she was named one of the top fifteen emerging photographers in the world by American Photo magazine and she won the Critical Mass Book Award. A monograph of her series Domesticated will be published in fall 2008.”

Have you started to find a trend in YOUR photography? What is your “look”. Do you even want one? Good questions. Comments?

    Let’s not forget I’m using 35mm :)

Let’s not forget that a 65mm lens on an RZ is the equivalent of a 40mm in 35mm terms.

James I believe you are right. From what I’ve read she is very fussy about her lighting and only shoots at certain times of day.

I do like her from the perspective that I find my street shots are shot at 85mm and 200mm wide open.

    Jason.

I believe Ms. Stein uses only available light and a Mamiya RZ medium format camera with a 65 mm lens for all her images.
